Autotech Academy has generated a great level of interest within the automotive aftermarket and with both colleges and students alike. Since its launch in 2021, internship roles have been created with major automotive employers including, Ford, Richmond Group, Peugeot and In ‘n’ Out and several fully qualified automotive students, who have completed their internships have gone on to secure permanent employment.
As with any new initiative there are many questions, so Autotech Academy have taken the time to answer the top questions regularly put to them in a bid to dispel any myths and help students fully understand the many benefits an internship with Autotech Academy can deliver.
- What is an internship and what is involved?
Autotech Academy’s internship is a simple concept. Students are placed into a garage or maintenance repair business on a paid internship lasting from 3 to 12 months, depending on their qualification and area of interest. Each student is paid a monthly, above minimum wage, equipped with a Teng Tools tool kit, standard PPE, and uniform (if required.)
Depending on the employer’s needs, interns can also be offered ongoing training, either via a manufacturer training course or an approved OEM standard training partner such as Bosch. Interns can also receive IMI Level 3 IMI electric/hybrid vehicle training through Autotech Training.
During the internship, a placement mentor will be appointed to help the student with their daily work, while the Academy team provides ongoing support.
- Do I get paid during the internship?
Yes. The concept is not unlike Autotech Recruit’s temporary recruitment model, where garages pay an hourly fee for vehicle technicians. Garages, or any maintenance repair employer, will pay an hourly rate for a fully vetted, and fully equipped, intern. The rate will be higher than that of an apprentice.
- What will it cost me?
Nothing, although it is expected that students turn up on time, correctly dressed and equipped and give the internship their full attention. Autotech Academy will equip each student with their own toolbox, worth approximately £500 through Academy sponsor, Teng Tools.
- What happens after the Internship?
Once the internship programme is complete, employers can decide if they want to hire the student on a full-time permanent basis. If not, the intern not only holds their qualification, but has additional training and work experience, and Autotech Academy can support them into another internship.
- What level do I need to have achieved?
Autotech Academy are looking for students who are qualified in one of the following:
Level 3: These can be IMI, City and Guilds or ABC
- Can I do it whilst I am learning?
The internship is conditional on the student completing their Level 3 qualifications. They are also full time positions and based on working a 40 hour week.
